Back to School: Build your College Republican Chapter, Part IV- Events

By punch bowl | August 16, 2007

In this last segment of Building Your Chapter I will discuss the importance and purpose of events to your chapter and members.

Events are important for three reasons.

First, they are fun. Causing problems, evil stares, and phone calls from the University are fun, at least to me and probably will be to many of your members.

Second, your members didn’t join the College Republicans just to go to meetings. They joined to be a part of something and to make a difference. Holding events helps your members feel like they are making that difference. Members want to elect Republicans and spread Republican principles, so hold events to ensure that they can do just that.

Third, holding events recruits for your chapter assuming you advertise the event as being sponsored by the College Republicans. By having events, you advertise your organization year round and by doing so you may recruit members that you missed during your recruitment drive at the beginning of the semester. Active clubs recruit more members simply because kids want to be a member of groups that actually do stuff instead of only talking about doing stuff.

Events are arguably the most effective thing you can do as a chapter. By holding an event, you have fun, satisfy the needs of current members and you may even recruit several additional members simply by holding a single event.

I hope this series has been helpful. If you have any suggestions on how your chapter does any of the topics covered in this series feel free to make a comment to that effect.

Good luck recruiting, communicating, planning meetings, and holding events. Essentially good luck building your chapter as we go into the critical 2008 election season.

I feel like the ideas are good, but more specific things would be helpful. For example, what types of events? Speakers are obviously a popular one, as are debates. Are there any other suggestions? Other original suggestions for recruitment?
