“Courage”

By rawhide | August 30, 2007

That’s the message that John McCain is stressing in two recent videos released on his campaign website. One is a 12-minute documentary of McCain and his experience as a prisoner of war. The other is a 60-second version of the documentary.

60-second version.

12–minute version.

Couple of thoughts: I think McCain’s “Ready to Lead” theme is a non-starter. He’s running in a primary against two candidates, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, who have far more executive experience (Guilani/Romney = lots, McCain = none) than he does. McCain will try to say that he has the governmental knowledge and experience to make him “ready to lead,” but all that does is emphasize the fact that he’s a long-term Washington insider at a time when people want change.

The other subtle thing that I noticed was the appearace of McCain’s mother. McCain turned 71 yesterday, and his age is an issue. But when I saw his mom in the commercial, deep down I thought, “His mom’s still alive? McCain must not be that old, if his mom is still around.” I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mom McCain show up in several more ads between now and the primaries.
