You Decide: Is Huckabee (a little, a lot, or not at all) Socialist on Health Care

By sage of monticello | September 7, 2007

I am not convinced that he is not. I think his strategy is to craft a policy and a message based on that policy intended to cast a net that will catch the greatest number of voters.

Whether or not Huckabee committs this political crime or not, sacrificing conservative principles for independent votes, in the end, often proves detrimental for both that candidate and that candidate’s party.

I have to disagree with you here. The Governor is clearly against the government mandated universal health systems the Democratic candidates have been proposing.

Governor Huckabee’s campaign website breaks down his views on health care in bullet points and the second point states “We don’t need universal health care mandated by federal edict.”
Governor Huckabee believes that US citizens need more control of their choices in health care. He wants citizens to own their medical records, not the doctor or the insurance company so each citizen has the freedom to pursue the best medical care they can find. He also wants to get rid of the employer based system so the people can pursue the best medical care they can find, independent from their employer. Most people don’t work for the same employer their whole lives (as was the case in the 40’s when the employer based system came about) so it just doesn’t make sense for health care to be connected to employers. The individual will always have their best health interest in mind unlike the employer who is likely more concerned with the company’s interests.

Governor Huckabee sums it up in his July 27th interview on CNN’s situation in a “debate” with Governor Richardson when he says “It’s not that I am against Universal Coverage I’m just against the government picking my doctor I’m against the government running all of it.” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOkHtLThlAw&mode=related&search=)

I doubt many Americans would disagree that it would be great if every citizen had access to health care, we just disagree on how that should be accomplished done and Governor Huckabee firmly believes it is not the role of the government to mandate health care and that the individual needs to be in control of his health care options, hardly views that correlate with socialized medicine.
