Today, Minnesota College Republicans chapters on several campuses are collectively displaying 2,977 American flags to remember the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Additionally, 2 College Republicans chapters (St. John’s University and Winona State) are hosting flag memorials consisting of all 2,977 American flags.
The Minnesota College Republicans chapters at the following schools are participating in the project: University of Minnesota – Morris, College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, Bethel University, Hamline University, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, St. Olaf College, Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota State University – Mankato, Winona State University, and St. Mary’s University.
Ten College Republican chapters located at Minnesota colleges and universities across the state are part of over 150 schools in the nation hosting Young America’s Foundation’s “9/11 Never Forget Project.” “The Never Forget Project is aimed to show respect for the victims of the terrorist attacks and to take a stand in uniting the campus community around the most significant domestic attack of terrorism on our way of life in American history.
In particular, this statewide effort illustrates that the terrorist attacks of September 11th touched all of us, as Americans,” said Minnesota College Republicans State Chair Bethany Dorobiala.
In addition to the American flags, the remembrance memorials include prayer services, moments of silence, and the distribution of “Never Forget” buttons, stickers, and wall posters.
Last year in recognition of the 5th anniversary of the attacks, the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities hosted a 2,977 flag memorial on Coffman Memorial Union plaza. This year, the flags are divided amongst campuses across the state to present a sense of unity in remembering this important day in American history.
