McCain starts running TV ads

By rawhide | September 27, 2007

John McCain released two new television commercial today. By the content (particularly the 30-second ad), I’m guessing that they are running in New Hampshire.

The 60-second.

The 30-second.

Like the latest Romney ad, McCain subtlely attacks the president (Iraq strategy & Katrina) and the Republicans in Congress (earmarks). As I mentioned when the Romney commercial was released, I think this is regrettable action that our nominee must take if they want to have a chance at winning.

I like the fact that McCain is highlighting his military service in Vietnam, but he sounds more and more like John Kerry: “I served heroically in Vietnam, so I should be commander-in-chief.” That didn’t work out so well for Kerry.

I especially like the “One Man” theme. This is a message that the McCain campaign needs to continue. John McCain was effective in 2000 because he was a maverick, but he lost that image over the last few years by attempting to become the establishment candidate, which he had almost accomplished at the beginning of the year. And then the wheels fell off his campaign wagon. Now that he is renewing the “me against the world” mentality, I think that he will begin to rise in the polls.

McCain’s best chance is New Hampshire, which is where these commercials will be running. If I were John McCain, I would skip Iowa and hope that someone else defeats or at least wounds Romney while I camped out in New Hampshire, just like in 2000. His biggest threat isn’t a Republican, but Barack Obama. In 2000, McCain only won New Hampshire because of the independent vote. Had only Republicans voted, Bush would have won. McCain needs to keep independents from flocking to Obama to have a chance.

John McCain isn’t done, not by a long shot. You wait and see. He will come storming back and peak in time for New Hampshire. My prediction is that he finishes top two in that primary.

There’s a big problem with McCain behind the scenes. See, they have so little money that they may have to accept public financing just to stay in the black through the primary.

Consider that the national convention isn’t until _next_ September. What you have is a situation where McCain will have no money to spend throughout the entire summer. Long story short, he is close to cashing himself out of this 2008 general election.
