The Butcher Strikes Again: SCHIP Debate is a Farse
By sage of monticello | September 28, 2007
Tom Coburn speaks truth on the SCHIP bill. A bill which recently passed both chambers of Congress and is on its way to the President for his promised veto. A veto that will be sustained by at least the House and most likely the Senate.
My criticism of Republicans on this issue and other similar issues is their failure to get out in front of them. Americans aren’t overly philosophical but they understand that it doesn’t make sense to spend billions of dollars to insure kids who already have private insurance (6 our 0f 10 kids on SCHIP had private insurance before receiving government benefits)
So my question is, where’s that message? Why are’t Republicans slamming this bill in front of the public with common sense facts like that? Why aren’t they proactively shaping public opinion instead of simply reacting to it - and in the process being branded as anti-children. We all know that’s not true, but its our fault for allowing it to happen.
The path from the minority is through positive, common sensical, proactive political messages. The Democrats have one of the three, but we could have them all…
Sen. Coburn tries, but unfortunately his message is limited to the floor of the U.S. Senate and destined to be heard only by(nerdy) people who watch CSPAN. Persons, much to my dismay, like myself…

Coburn voted against the bill to raise the government’s borrowing limit. Consistent driving doesn’t help if you’re willing to drive your bus off the side of the mountain.
