A press release sent to me by Justin Zatkoff, Chair of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans:

MI-College Republicans from across the state of Michigan have planned to “Remember 9/11” by setting up flag memorials of approximately 3,000 flags at 9 schools on September 11, 2007. Each flag represents 1 victim of the 2,997 killed during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“Unfortunately on many college campuses you see a complete lack of ‘remembrance’ for the terrible atrocities that took place only six years ago,” said Justin Zatkoff, Chairman of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans. “As College Republicans, we have taken it upon ourselves to remember the tragedy that most schools choose to ignore. I encourage college students to seek out a flag memorial and take a moment of their day to ‘Remember 9/11.’”

These flag memorials will be visible throughout the entire day on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. The following is a list of schools and locations where flag memorials are being held:

Calvin College: Commons Lawn
Central Michigan University: Lawn between Library and walkway
Ferris State University: Campus Quad
Grand Valley State University: Cook Tower
Hillsdale College: Campus Quad
Michigan State University: The Rock
Oakland University: Behind the Oakland Center
University of Michigan: In the Diag, in front of flagpole
Western Michigan University: In front of the Bernhard Center

nstead of working through student governments and college administrations, Michigan’s College Republicans under Chairman Justin Zatkoff are dividing campuses by hosting “College Republicans Remember 9/11″ events across the state tomorrow.

Why can’t we come together as students — not Republicans or Democrats — in memory of the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks?

And College Republicans should be asking who’s paying for these events.

The Hillsdale Daily News reported that Zatkoff’s Michigan Federation of College Republicans is “coordinating and paying for the remembrances,” which are being held on nine campuses. This claim was also made in an August 19 posting on Facebook, when Zatkoff said: “Not that it really matters, but yes, MFCR is paying (and has already bought) for the flags.”

What type of chairman says “not that it really matters” when questions are asked about the sources of funding? College Republicans deserve ethical leadership that doesn’t mind when members raise questions and participate in the decision-making process.

Despite Zatkoff’s claims, several chapters have been asked to pay $50 to cover the costs of the event, and he is also contacting supporters of presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani in the hopes they would contribute money to College Republicans who honor 9/11.

And if that doesn’t raise enough questions, we know Young America’s Foundation is helping College Republican groups with “Remember 9/11″ despite the fact campaign finance laws prohibit non-profits from contributing to partisan political organizations.

Are you mentally challenged? (That is the person that made the post, not the Michigan College Republicans).

Why would you honestly attack someone for hosting 9/11 memorials? Shame on you “ReformCaucus.” (whatever that means).
