Madison, WI - Today the Wisconsin College Republicans filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Education agasint the University of Wisonsin - Madison, charging it with violations of student privacy rights under federal law.

Charlie Sykes has reported that a UW-Madison burueacrat used individual student financial aid data to recruit students to participate in a rally with Governor Doyle regarding the state budget. This use of individual, sensitive student data violates the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and UW-Madison’s own privacy policies.

“This is outrageous,” said Ryan Wrasse, Chairman of the Wisconsin College Republicans and senior at UW-Stevens Point. “We are not going to stand by while student’s privacy is ignored by UW administrators looking for human props for their political stunt.”

“This episode is typical of UW administrators and Governor Doyle. IT reeks of arrogance and self-righteousness,” Wrasee continued. “Students have a legal right to have sensitive personal information like this kept private, and UW administrators must respect that right.”

“UW bureaucrats cannot flaunt federal law and invade student privacy as part of their crusade for more tax dollars. We are asking the federal Department of Education to investigate this despicable conduct and to vindicate student privacy rights against administrators’ need for propoganda tools,” Wrasse concluded.

A copy of the complaint to the U.S. Department of Education, which was sent by the Wisconsin CRs via certified mail, can be found here.
