GA Federation Spotlight, Part II: Goals and Upcoming Events

By punch bowl | October 18, 2007

What are the goals and upcoming events of the Georgia Association of College Republicans? Written by Chair Esther Clark.

To be the best we can be! How’s that for cheesy?!

With Georgia being such a strong Republican stronghold these days, it’s easy for College Republicans (and others!) to slip into apathy. It’s also much harder to fire them up when there isn’t major controversy or a politician they love in serious danger of losing a seat. Therefore, a lot of our focus over the next few months is on recruiting and motivating students to see the big picture and to understand the need for active involvement in ’08. A few major steps to ensure GACR is ready to motivate large numbers of College Republicans next summer and fall:

20 New CR Chapters Here We Come!

By mid-spring ’08, we want at least 20 new chapters going strong. Our Regional Political Directors are responsible for starting these chapters – identifying a few leaders on campus, helping with the first recruitment drive and attending the first two meetings (or asking another GACR Exec member to attend instead). New clubs each receive a small block grant to jumpstart their chapter – and welcome them to the team! Nothing says we love you like money!!

College Republicans Want YOU!

The first spring issue of most school newspapers in GA will contain a College Republican advertisement enticing them to join The Best Party on Camus. The advertisements will be coordinated with the school’s CR chapter to ensure they have their first meeting within a day or two of the paper hitting. If the school resides in one of the target U.S. House Districts then there will be a blurb about that – or whatever other critical race is happening near that school.

2008 Annual GACR Convention

Conventions normally turn out to be a gathering of the same ol’ College Republican crowd with maybe a few never-before-seen CR’s showing up. This time we want to make sure it really is all-inclusive…and actively reaches out to conservative students that are not yet connected to the College Republicans at their school. To this end, we’ll once again employ advertisements starting two months out in college papers across the state. Goal is to bring 100 NEW College Republicans to the State Convention. Tentative plans are to hold our Awards Banquet and Dinner at the Governor’s Mansion with one of our U.S. Senators as the keynote. The convention will be on Saturday with a lineup of awesome speakers – and maybe even a surprise guest! This will be the official ’08 kickoff event!

Capitol Internships

We’re working with some of the Legislators to put together a program that easily allows us to help them find interns/aides during session. We want to help our College Republicans to be the first offered available positions. Not only does it give the CR’s valuable experience but by doing it through a College Republican program it helps get out name in front of the Legislators – and reminds them to appreciate us (i.e. DONATE!)!

Express Trips

GACR is known for their Express Trips which deploys a group of students to a critical voter outreach area to make phone calls, canvass neighborhoods, put up signs, and whatever else the campaign needs for the weekend. All expenses are covered by GACR – and everyone has a blast! More info on targeted races to come later…
