Maryland CRs protest taxes: A Tale of Two Rallies

By punch bowl | October 30, 2007

Hundreds of Marylanders from around the state gathered in front of the State House in Annapolis on Monday afternoon for a “No Tax Hike” Rally to demonstrate the widespread opposition to Governor Martin O’Malley’s proposed tax increases. Many Maryland College Republicans were present at the rally.

After the “No Tax Hike” Rally, union workers were bussed in to hold a “pro-tax” rally of their own. College Republicans and many other Marylanders stuck around, holding up anti-tax signs while surrounded by very unfriendly people. After fifteen minutes or so, they were asked to leave by the police because the police feared for the safety of the conservative protestors.

The Maryland CRs then left the main protest and went across the street to continue showing our opposition to tax increases. Judging by the honks and waves from passing cars, many drivers passing by agreed with our cause.

After their rally was over, many liberals and union workers rushed across the street to confront our counter protest. College Republicans and other Marylanders who opposed tax increases were surrounded by opponents who tried to drown us out. This video gives a sense of the utter chaos for a few minutes- you can hear both pro- and anti-tax chants at the same time.

Overall, the day, I am told, was very succesful for CRs and every Marylander who understands how tax increases will hurt the residents of our great state. Governor O’Malley has been trying to craft the illusion that most Marylanders support the tax increases, but the Maryland CRs definitely disproved that today!

I was at the two Anti-Tax Rallies yesterday and as these union guys showed up, I stopped them and asked them what their teeshirts meant. They said they were from Union #whatever from DC and they were here to participate in the Democratic Process. They’d learned that line well.

My question? What the heck are DC folks doing at a MARYLAND rally on MARYLAND issues? Is the MOB so desperate that they have to truck ‘em in from out of state?

Translation for non-Marylanders- MOB is the nickname some have given to Miller (Senate President), O’Malley (Governor), and Busch (Speaker of the House)- the three biggest proponents of the tax increases.
