Former CR Bob Cornelius to run for Congress

By punch bowl | November 4, 2007

Bob Cornelius, who was chairman of the Eastern New Mexico University CRs for two years and the executive director of the New Mexico Federation of College Republicans for two years, has announced that he is running for Congress. Bob is seeking to fill the seat vacated by Republican Steve Pearce, who is vying to replace retiring Senator Pete Domenici.

The press release, issued yesterday:

CORNELIUS TO ENTER RACE FOR NM CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 2
FORMS EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE WITH ANNOUNCEMENT PLANNED FOR THANKSGIVING WEEK

Tatum - Bob Cornelius formed an Exploratory Committee early Saturday morning with the intent to seek the Republican Party nomination to New Mexico’s 2nd United States Congressional District.

Cornelius, a native of Tatum, New Mexico and a long-time Republican Party activist, most recently held the position of Executive Director for the Bernalillo County Republican Party.

“It has been an honor to serve in my many capacities within the Republican Party. When the Party needed me to serve, I left home to Albuquerque to represent the Party, its platform, and its candidates to the best of my ability”, Cornelius stated from his family home. “Now, I feel I have been called to serve my Party, my State, and my Country in a different capacity and that is by coming home and becoming a candidate for the United States Congress.”

If chosen to be the Republican Party nominee, Cornelius will replace current three-term U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce on the ballot.

“Congressman Steve Pearce has served his constituents well over the years, and I wish him the best as he seeks to become our next United States Senator”, Cornelius added. “Steve worked hard to bring in new jobs, fight the state’s debilitating meth problem, and to support our farmers, ranchers, and the oil industry. I promise to commit myself to these issues and build upon the successes Steve brought to the District. He and I share the same values.”

Cornelius began what he called a “Conversation with Conservatives” Saturday morning and will travel District-wide over the next few weeks. A formal decision will be made Thanksgiving week in front of friends and family. Details will be provided when they become available.
