21 year-old College Republican wins Mayorial race

By punch bowl | November 8, 2007

Waterville, Ohio - Councilman Derek Merrin, an unabashed admirer of economist Milton Friedman, handily defeated incumbent Chuck Peyton, who was mayor of Waterville for two terms in the 1980s.

Mr. Merrin is a history major at the University of Toledo who took his city council seat only last year.

Congratulations, Derek.

I bet he had a YouTube video and a facebook group - a combination which cannot be stopped, only contained.

Why did you have to call the other candidate in the Waterville, OR mayoral election “an old guy”?

    Was that really necessary?

I always thought that a main tenet of concervatism was respect for elders.

    Please respond via email.

This was in Ohio (Lucas County), not in Oregon. Derek was also a sitting Councilman in Waterville, so this victory is no fluke.

Wow! This wasn’t a fluke. Since he was previously a councilman voters had several years to see this kid’s record — and then elected him Mayor! If you look at his website, http://www.derekmerrin.com some of his ideas are fantastic. Look for this kid to go far in politics.
