CMU initiates expulsion proceedings against Dennis Lennox

By punch bowl | November 29, 2007

RedState reports that Central Michigain University has initiated expulsion proceedings at conservative student activist Dennis Lennox.

The controversy centers on Lennox’s activities and efforts relating to CMU professor Gary Peter’s decision to run for Congress.

First, the University determined that Lennox was mentally unstable and a potential campus shooter because his aggressive tactics evinced by his propensity to videotape his targets.

Next, the university banned Lennox from videotaping university officials while on university property. Shortly after the ban took effect, the ACLU stepped in on Lennox’s behalf, arguing that the ban would un reasonably impede Lennox’s First Amendment right to political advocacy.

Now, the university had initiated expulsion proceedings against Lennox. RedState reports on why.

Why? Because Dennis was passing out fliers against the Congressional Candidate/Professor. An unknown person going behind Dennis to throw away his fliers asked Dennis for his name and information (sounds rather East German, doesn’t it?). Dennis asked the unknown person for the same information. Neither would yield first.

It turns out the unknown person is a university official and now the university says Dennis violated the student code by failing to give his information, along with two other charges.

Describing the tactics of CMU as “gestap,” RedState is encouraging people to call Central Michigan University President, Michael Rao. I would similarly encourage you. Mr. Rao’s number is 989-774-4000.

I have recently begun to track this story carefully on my own blog and after speaking with several folks, the most troubling part is the manner in which the admin has dealt with Lennox. Their unfair and arbitrary abuse of power should send shivers down everyone’s spine.

His activism should have been embraced and engaged. College is the exact appropriate place for such activism and the proper response should have been vigorous debate. The admin should have welcomed his oversight, and engaged his ideas and tried to turn the incident into a forum for the free flow of ideas. Isn’t that the purpose of college? They didn’t. Instead, they tried to squash it and in a heavy handed manner that should scare all. Here is how I wrote about…
