Liberal group silent as woman faces possibly of execution
By sage of monticello | November 29, 2007
A British teacher was recently arrested in Sudan for possession of a teddy bear. Charged with inciting hatred and insulting religion, Gillian Gibbons, will stand trial and may face execution if found guilty.
Reporting on the trial, a “powerful” Sudanese newspaper urged authorities to call a hardline Islamist leader linked to Osama bin Laden to give evidence at the trial, to stress how offensive the case was to Muslims.
Extreme Islamic groups further urged the necessity of Mrs. Gibbons death and urged Muslims to hold street protests after prayers tomorrow.
A London newspaper is reporting that –
One lawyer said that if Mrs Gibbons pleads guilty and makes profuse apologies, she could emerge with a “relatively minor penalty”, such as a hefty fine or a jail term equivalent to the four days she has already spent in custody.
But he warned that rising anger in Sudan, as news of the case spread, might affect the court’s decision.
Depsite the tremendous and blatant violation of Mrs. Gibbons fundamental human rights, such as freedom of religion and a fair trial, the liberal women’s adovocacy group NOW has been silent on the issue.
Why?
Do they only fight for women’s rights in place where women already has the rights that NOW allegedly fights for? Not much of a fight if women already have the rights that are being “fought” for.
If there is something so universal about rights, then why is it improper to fight for them in other countries, such as Sudan?
