Is Romney sending a subliminal message to Bush voters?
By rawhide | December 21, 2007
Much media attention this week has focused on Mitt Romney’s attempt to align himself with President Bush. I have yet to see a connection made between Romney’s commercials and the Bush 2004 commercials. Some of the connection is as simple as using the same music, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, some of the commercials look very similar and use similar themes. Judge for yourself.
Similarity #1: Music.
This Romney ad was released on November 18, 2007. The topic is the American family.
Now watch this George W. Bush ad from 2004. The music is the same, and there are similar images of a child running (into a field in the Bush ad, on a baseball field in the Romney ad).
Not a big connection, but a connection nonetheless.
Similarity #2: Music & theme.
This Romney ad was released on November 28, 2007. The title is a “Historic Choice.”
Now watch this George W. Bush ad from 2004. The music is the same, and the theme is the same.
The ad begins by describing a world of dangerous problems. To face these problems, we need our values and a strong leader that shares those values (Bush in this ad, Romney in the other). The quick transitions of the two commercials even feels the same. A definite connection.
Similarity #3: Music and theme.
This Romney ad was released on December 19, 2007. The theme is Romney’s search for the missing daughter of his business partner.
Now watch this Progress for America ad for Bush in 2004. The music, if not the same, sounds very close. The human side theme runs through both ads as well.
In both ads, Bush and Romney go out of their way to reach out to a girl in need (emotional need for the girl in the Bush commercial, need of rescue for the girl in the Romney ad). A father in both ads expresses gratefulness and emphasizes the leadership and compassion that was displayed. Again, the ads look alike in appearance.
Coincidence? Possibly. But you have to admit, these are three very curious coincidences. Maybe the Romney people are just employing the methods that work. Or maybe, there is a subliminal message here. After all, we’ve spent the last week discussing whether an illuminated bookcase in Huckabee’s Christmas ad was a subliminal message. Why not talk about a potential subliminal message to Bush voters by the Romney campaign?

The Romney campaign hired the same guy Bush had for commercials a year ago. He is the best in the field. This is probably why they are very similar.
