Primary Colors: The Republican Party needs bold colors, not pale pastels

By rawhide | December 27, 2007

We need a party that paints its positions in bold colors, not pale pastels. So said Ronald Reagan.

That need is no less today.

The Republican Party must have positions painted in bold colors on the critical issues that face this country. Abortion is murder. Gay marriage is sin. Gun ownership is a right. On these core principles of our party, there must be no equivocation. We must stand and fight to defend the unborn, the family and the rights and freedoms that we hold dear. Bold colors. The right colors.

Yet, the former mayor of New York is someone whose every stance is shaded pale. Abortion is a personal choice. Gay marriage is a difference in lifestyle. Guns are dangerous. On these core principles of our party, Rudy Giuliani has equivocated. He stands in stark contrast to our fundamental beliefs, to the rights and freedoms that we hold dear. Pale pastels. The wrong colors.

Pale pastels are losing colors. The activist wing of the Republican Party will not work tirelessly to support someone who does not share their values. The vaunted Republican volunteer force will be non-existent. Faithful Republican voters will not be inspired to travel to the polls on Election Day. Turnout of the vast Republican army will be dismal. Lacking the turnout machine to reach voters who don’t want to be turned out is a bad combination. A discouraged base will lose the 2008 election.

Bold colors are winning colors. The activist wing of the Republican Party worked tirelessly for President George W. Bush because they believed he shared their values. The vaunted Republican volunteer force made the difference in a razor-close election. Faithful Republican voters were inspired to travel to the polls on Election Day. President Bush received more votes than any other candidate in history, thanks to the turnout of the vast Republican army. A strong turnout machine reaching excited voters proved to be a successful combination. A motivated base won the 2004 election.

In few other elections has the need for bold colors been as great. The likely Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, is an avowed liberal with the desire to implement her destructive plans. Her record is one of deceit, corruption and manipulation. Some call her evil. A strong conservative is needed to highlight the differences in ideology and leadership, for these differences must be made clear in bold colors.

Rudy Giuliani must not be the Republican nominee in 2008. He is no strong conservative. He cannot highlight ideological differences with Hillary. He cannot motivate Republicans to volunteer or vote in the numbers needed to win. Rudy puts states into play, but those states are red states, because of Republicans staying home. He will lose.

The Republican Party needs bold colors, Ronald Reagan colors. We do not need pale pastels, Rudy Giuliani colors.

My “primary colors” will never wave for Rudy.
