Why College Republicans exist
By punch bowl | December 29, 2007
We exist for people like Reut Cohen.
Reut Cohen, a College Republican and recent graduate of UC Irvine, has a history of reporting and exposing the radical Islamists who intimidate and downgrade the academic environment University of California - Irvine campus.
Her story is a fine example of why the College Republicans exist, even in the most hostile of environments.
Here is a bit of a reflection on her experience, told through her own words:
I attended UC Irvine just like any other student. I worked very hard to put myself through school. Unfortunately, I do not come from a particularly wealthy background.
Because of the tense atmosphere at UC Irvine, from Muslim students and incompetent administrators, I felt obligated to graduate an entire year early. I found that my opinions were not welcomed in certain classrooms, with administrators, and certain peers. A university should encourage open dialogue and freedom of speech, yet I constantly found myself on the receiving end of harassment and intimidation. It became evident that freedom of speech at UC Irvine was one-sided.
As many of you know, I did my best not to let this affect me personally. In fact, I became known for being vocal, an advocate for America and Israel. I wrote for several publications. I became involved with the College Republicans and found a supportive group of charismatic and intelligent students who shared many of my sentiments. In short, I became involved in any way that I could.
Despite all of this, during January of my third year in college, I decided to petition for graduation as I had more than enough credits. It was my opinion that remaining in an institution that stifles free thought and doesn’t protect civil liberties would be quite pointless. Especially when I was paying more than $20,000 a year for the experience.
In a sense, I feel that I was robbed of a normal college experience. However, I have no regrets. I know that I’ve made an impact on campus. It’s pretty clear from the feedback that I’ve received.
So if some of you find the fact that I abhor terrorists questionable, if you find my politics not to your flavor, you can simply refrain from visiting…
