Polling numbers mixed: Huckabee, Romney, McCain all have leads…

By sage of monticello | December 30, 2007

Poll 1

According to a recent Reuters-CSPAN-Zogby poll, former governors Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are statistically tied atop the lead for the coveted Iowa Caucus, where a win could propel either to the Republican Party nomination. With only six percent saying they were undecdided, Huckabee holds a small one-point lead over Romney with a margin of error of 3.4.

Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, held a statistically insignificant one-point edge over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 29 percent to 28 percent. Arizona Sen. John McCain was a distant third with 11 percent.

Three Republicans, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, registered 8 percent in the poll.

The poll found about 6 percent of likely caucus-goers in each party are uncertain of their choice in Thursday’s contest, the first big test in the state-by-state battle to choose candidates for the November presidential election.

On the Democratic side, the poll found Hillary Clinton to have a slightly more significant lead. The poll results gave Clinton (31%) a four-point edge over Barack Obama (27%) and a seven-point edge over John Edwards (24%). The polling suggests that the bump for Clinton, who had previously been statistically tied with Obama, came from a slight increase in support from Iowa women. The margin of error for the Democrats was 3.3, placing Clinton slightly outside of it.

Poll 2

A poll by MSNBC shows much different results. A recent MSNBC poll, on the Republican side, had Mitt Romney leading by four-points, trailed by Mike Huckabee (23%), Fred Thompson (14%), and John McCain (13%). On the Democratic side, the poll gave the lead to John Edwards with 24%, followed by Hillary Clinton (23%) and Barack Obama (22%).

This poll is less accurate than the Reuters-CSPAN-Zogby poll because of its higher margin of error (5%), which reflects a smaller sample size (less people were asked what they thought).

Poll 3

Drudge is reporting that a recent national Rasmussen poll shows that John McCain holds the lead nationally.
