Breaking News: Miccarelli has resigned

By punch bowl | February 21, 2008

CRNC Co-Chair Nick Miccarelli has resigned. From a press release forwarded to CR Nation:

As he pursues his campaign for State Representative from Pennsylvania’s 162nd district National Co-Chairman Nick Miccarelli is formally resigning his post within the College Republican National Committee. He had the following statement regarding his departure:

“It is with mixed emotions today that I announce my resignation as Co-Chairman of the College Republican National Committee. I have declared my candidacy for state representative in Pennsylvania’s 162nd district and I am resigning my position so that I may devote myself fully to my campaign and so that the CRNC can find a Co-Chairman that will be fully involved with the organization’s efforts in 2008. This was a very difficult decision to make but it would prove impossible for me to balance both of these tasks.

It was my privilege to be elected to this position and my honor to serve alongside Charlie Smith and a team of talented, dedicated young leaders. Under our administration so far, fundraising has been rebuilt on the face of a fresh new image and outreach to donors has never in the history of the CRNC been met with more success. STORM is primed to be the most successful program ever launched by the CRNC and if College Republicans around the country utilize it to its maximum capacity it will tip the scales in our favor in races all over the country. Finally, perhaps we can be most proud of the reforms which have made our organization more transparent and ethical. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to what the future holds for our organization.

After countless doors knocked on, dollars raised, and friendships built, I bid you all a fond farewell. I hope you will join me in continuing to support Charlie and the CRNC team as they build up this great organization.

Finally, I would like every single person in our organization to know that I consider you all friends. If there is anything I can ever do to help any of you, I’m only a phone call away. Thank you all so much for the support you have shown me as I make this exciting transition.”

Following Nick’s resignation Chairman Smith offered the following, “Nick has been an integral part of our team and of the movement to make College Republicans successful. He is a dear friend, and while his help will be missed at the CRNC, we wish him all the best in his efforts for the Pennsylvania House and in all his future endeavors.”

In line with the governing articles of the CRNC constitution the Executive Board will elect a temporary Co-Chairman to fill the vacancy until a vote by the National Board can be taken at the next scheduled Board Meeting.

Miccarelli was elected unanimously last July. CR Nation wishes him all the best in his campaign for state representative, and thanks him for his service to the College Republicans and, more importantly, to our country in the United States Army.

This is the CRNC’s number two spot. Who should be his replacement?

Justin Smith - there is not doubt in my mind that the replacement should be him. He gets stuff done…

Justin Smith is in law school, but who cares. He already does midwest vice-chair with no problem. If that is the case, what is to prevent him from doing a good job as Co-Chair? Also, past big names in the CR world have been law students, such as Dan Carlson and Keith Gates (just to name a few)

Past Big Names in the CR World that have been law students are Dan Carlson and Keith Gates?

I suppose they are big names, but that does not mean they were effective. Keith Gates was a complete fool. Who can forget that episode he had at the Denver Board Meeting a couple of years. And Dan Carlson isn’t exactly the definition of class either.

If the board elects Ryan Bilodeau to office, they have went against everything they campaigned on. He represents all that is wrong with College Republicans of the past. He is a deceptive liar.

I will not be surprised if we see him in jail for some sort of scandal before he’s done in politics.

  27. Anonymous Says:
    February 22nd, 2008 at 11:43 am

The smart choice would be a lesser known state chair w/o the baggage…someone that is out of the immediate circle of national officers, yet is friendly to their agenda and can get things accomplished…the chance of this happening is very small though…

  28. Anonymous Says:
    February 22nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm

I agree, they need some young blood. All these people mentioned are like 35 and have too much baggage.

  29. Anonymous Says:
    February 22nd, 2008 at 12:12 pm

It should be Blake. He’s worked tirelessly for reform over the years…without ever seeking an elected position. I hope the officers pay attention to all the time he’s given to the org and select him to fill Nick’s place.

Everyone needs a redhead on a board.

  30. Joe Bucklin Says:

Bilodeau would be great. He’s classy, good looking, soft-spoken, very well read, really easy to get along with…plus he admires and respects people of all backgrounds and opinions. I believe he’d make a fine co-chair.

    heh heh

Blake would give Alabama two spots nationally (with Kristy leading the South)…my guess is mike miltenberger or Swanson, but I def. think we’d be better w/ someone from the outside

  35. Anonymous Says:

Blake does not attend school in AL. He’s in AR.

  36. Boston CR Says:
    February 22nd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Hah! They picked him once…. Look how that turned out. It is true-he did run it into the ground. Gwozdz has built it back up to a respectable position.

  37. CR Watcher Says:

  38. Thomas Says:
    February 22nd, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Gwozdz is a back stabber, look what he did to Miltenberger. You should not have a national officer who is also a personal traitor to his own colleagues.

I am glad Nick has stepped down, he did the right thing. The CRs DO deserve a dedicated co-chair who will give their everything.

  39. New Mid West Reader Says:
    February 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 pm

I am a new reader here, but I think Wrasse up in Wisconsin is someone to consider as well. He would make a fine national officer. He has a ton of experience and by the sounds of it, he’s turning his federation around for the better.

    Just a thought.

  40. Anonymous Says:

Gwozdz is a class act. He did not backstab Miltenberger. The fact is, and any intelligent person understands, that Miltenberger and was a terrible chair and was only interested in advancing himself. College Republicans are better off not having assholes like him around.

  41. Jennifer Says:
    February 23rd, 2008 at 12:33 am

That’s simply not true. Ryan Bilodeau has extremely high ethical standards, raises a LOT of money in his state, and actually has a personality, unlike many CR’s.

  42. Rogers Says:
    February 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 am

Bilodeau may raise a lot of money, and have a personality…somewhat….but no way under any condition can you convince us he has high ethical standards

  43. Give me a break Says:
    February 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 am

Gwozdz did stab Miltenberger in the back. Whether Mike was a good Chairman has nothing to do with the fact that Gwozdz publicly torpedoed him and forced him to drop off the ticket. Gwozdz shouldn’t be trusted.

a great pick is a basic outsider that can get things done and is likeable… that may rule out most of the people everyone has talked about so far, but like someone said, maybe we need some completly new blood. My initial thoughts are Bethany from MN, Reece from Oregon, or Tyson from NC, they are nice people that are generally liked and doing great jobs in their states.

I’m not exactley sure how this process works, but here is a bright idea…open it up to application like any good business would

  45. Roger That Says:
    February 23rd, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Rogers: You can either be unsuccessful and have no enemies, or be successful and have enemies. Does anyone raise the money or have the media experience that Bilodeau has? Politics is war, and its people like you with no balls that should get out of this game.

  46. CR Maniac Says:
    February 23rd, 2008 at 8:43 pm

A great pick woulc be Justin Smith. He has so much experience and although not an outsider he would do a job as if an outsider.

Justin works hard and is politically savvy. He would make a great Co-Chair.

  47. Anonymous Says:
    February 23rd, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I agree, Justin Smith would be a good choice because he would not march lockstep with other CRNC officers. If you want an independent thinker, Justin Smith is your guy.

    Justin Smith for Co-Chair!

    Justin Smith for Chair ‘09!!!!

  49. Rogers Says:
    February 24th, 2008 at 8:51 am

Bilodeau, I mean Roger That: The enemies I’m referring to aren’t the Democrats, they’re other College Republicans. Being fake and pretending to be everyones friend then talking about them when they’re not around isn’t the way to conduct business if you want to be elevated within your own party. Yeah your stunts with Hillary were great and got good attention, yeah your doing a lot in your state and it got recognized by the CRNC, but when it comes down to it your fake to everyone around you and no one trusts you farther than they can throw you, ergo your not going to be promoted within the CRNC because your too polarizing, sorry buddy

  50. Adam Says:

    Bilodeau would be horrible.

If he runs, I wouldn’t be surprised if people produce some of the radical things he’s said over the years.

You know, before he started referring to himself as “Ryan K. Bilodeau” (remember, the K makes him look more important).

I’m sure many of us have his extremist statements in our AIM chat logs.

  51. Thomas Says:
    February 24th, 2008 at 11:50 pm

A great pick would be someone dedicated to the CRNC as an institution. Unfortunately, a man has to wonder if the officers sitting on the CRNC even match that description.
