Budget update

I received the below e-mail from Mitch McConnell’s office:

We’re in the middle of a long series of votes here on amendments to the budget, but I thought you might interested in some highlights of what has happened so far.

The Senate passed the Baucus amendment, which calls for the extension of only certain parts of the 2001 tax cuts. The problem is that this amendment leaves many taxpayers out in the cold. Americans making as little as $31,850 could be facing a tax hike when the Bush tax cuts expire, even with the Baucus amendment.

The other issue with the Baucus amendment is that a similar amendment was added to the budget last year, but the Democrats never acted to write those tax cuts into law.

Meanwhile, Democrats, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, voted against an amendment by Sen. Graham (R-SC) to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. Democrats also voted down an amendment that would have repealed the 1993 tax increase on social security benefits passed as part of the Clinton administration’s tax hike and an amendment that would have raised the exemption from the estate tax to $5 million for small businesses, family farms, and ranches.
