Weekend convention run-down

By punch bowl | April 3, 2008

As far as I know, there are six federation convention this weekend: Alabama, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York and Wisconsin.

In Missouri, current Vice-Chairman Jeremy Hagen and his slate are running largely unopposed. The one contested position is for treasurer, pitting incumbent Kristen Sanocki against Jared Daugherty.

I am told that Ms. Sanocki is the likely victor as she has fundraised several thousand dollars for the federation and is on “good terms” with most of the schools attending (and thus voting) at convention. An additional note, Missouri will be joined by not one, not two, but three represenatives of the CRNC: mid-wester regional vice-chair and Missouri student Justin Smith, treasurer Esther Clark and national field director Will Croswell.

In Nebraska, current chairman Dayton Headlee is running for re-election and is presenting an up-dated constitution. The existence of any opposition to either his candidacy or the constitutional amendments are unknown at this time.

Nebraska’s convention is being held in conjunction with the “first major fundraiser for the state organization.” At the fundraiser, Congressman Lee Terry and Former Congressman Hal Daub will be the guest speakers. It is reported that the purpose of the fundraiser is to bring well-known conservative speakers to Nebraska campuses to spread the Republican message.

One final note, CRNC secretary Dan Carlson will be attending and tagging along will be Justin Zatkoff, chairman of the Michigan College Republicans.

In New Hampshire, they don’t know who is running for federation executive board positions. Here is the explanation I was provided:

As a younger and smaller federation, we don’t have extended periods of campaigning. Interested candidates have until the day before the convention (this Friday) to announce their interest and will briefly speak on their own behalf at the convention prior to voting taking place

On Saturday evening there will be a formal dinner on the campus of Dartmouth College. Current chairman Greg Boguslavsky writes, “It’s an event that allows CRs from across the state to get to know each other and discuss the progress of the past year.”

New Hampshire’s convention speakers will be NH GOP Chairman Fergus Cullen and congressional candidates including Congressman Jeb Bradley, State Senator Bob Clegg, Grant Bosse, and John Stephen.

In New York, this will be the new leadership because none of the positions are being contested:

Chairman: John McGrath
Co-chair: Suzanne Mizeski
Treasurer: Abigail Cable
Secretary: Gabe Bedore
Western vice-chair: Brad Latone
Northern vice-chair: Dan Hetzel
NYC vice-chair: Christopher Buckingham
Capital Region vice-chair: Philip Monthie
Central Region vice-chair: Ariel Feinman

Additionally, New York’s convention will feature a line-up of speakers including NY National Committeeman and Congressional candidate Alexander Treadwell, the honorable Rick Lazio, NYGOP Executive Director Allison Coccia.

In Wisconsin, the race for chairman is between Nicholas Carow of UW-River Falls and Lucas Fuller of Marquette University. I am unaware which candidate is the favorite at this time. Current chairman, Ryan Wrasse is not seeking re-election because he is graduating.

Boasting the best speaking contingent out of the bunch, the Wisconsin convention features speeches by Fox News analyst Michelle Malkin, CRNC Chairman Charlie Smith, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, staff from the Wisconsin Conservation Voters Association and the D.C.-based Leadership Institute. Joining Charlie at convention will be his right hand man, Ethan Eilon, executive director for the CRNC.

In regards to Alabama’s convention, I am waiting for a response from someone closely tied to that state. However, in the interim, if anyone else has the scoop on Alabama, be sure to send it to me at crnation@gmail.com

And that is this weekend’s convention run-down. If I am missing a state or missing the point, please make sure to point it out by e-mailing me at crnation@gmail.com

You don’t know what your talking about. John McGrath’s team is respected and accomplished and will do a great job. Just because they’re running unopposed doesn’t mean they’re not qualified.
