Charlie Smith @ RNC meeting

By sage of monticello | April 6, 2008

Charlie Smith recently (but not this past weekend) attended a RNC meeting held in New Mexico. Before leaving, he decided to share with a brief message on what he took away from his attendance.

Charlie looking at the camera is great, but what about Daniel Swanson’s creative and humorous ads?

Was this illegal? It’s my understanding the CRNC is not part of the Republican Party. It’s a 527 PAC just like Swift Boat Vets for Truth, which means they are legally prohibited from coordinating activities with the candidates.

They’re legally prohibited from coordinating _expenditures_, but it’s not like Charlie Smith can’t sit in on their meeting as a Republican activist.

Anonymous- With the candidates, you are correct- 527s are not allowed to coordinate directly with campaigns. They are, however, allowed to work with the Republican party itself.

    Patriot,

What about Daniel Swanson’s creative ads. I have seen them and if I saw what you are referring to, those ads are not creative or humorous.

    Anonymous,

I applaud your desire to hold the CRNC accountable. Our ogranization should, to the best of its ability, be in strict accordance with campaign finance and election law.

However, in your comments you equate the RNC with being a candidate. Since the CRNC in not a candidate there is nothing illegal about Mr. Smith meeting with them. This is good, because it seems ridiculous to me to think that the chairman of the CRNC cannot meet with the RNC.

Keep holding ‘em accountable but stop going fishing to do it.

By the way I applaud Chairman Smith for doing this video and it’s uplifting to see a National Chairman who wants to keep his members on the same page. I hope Ms. Clark and he will keep it up.

It was my understanding McCain had his campaign team at these meetings in New Mexico as well. Thus my comment about coordinating with a candidate.

The CRNC has very good lawyers, I doubt very much they would have video taped themselves doing something illegal and not ran it past council.

perhaps those lawyers should go help Zatkoff here in michigan. he’s going to need it.

    1) If being in the same place as the McCain campaign constitutes coordination, then every organization at CPAC was in violation of the law. Maybe you should be a little more versed in your campaign finance law before making yourself look like an idiot - it’s coordination that matters, not proximity.

    2) Why aren’t you doing your job and recruiting, raising money, and organizing for the fall instead of bitching while Charlie and the CRNC is out building bridges our organization has never been so blessed to have?
