Vets on the Hill, Part I
By sage of monticello | April 7, 2008
As General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker prepare to address Congress on the state of military and political affairs in Iraq, hundreds of veterans have coalesced on the Hill to persuade Congress as to the logic of victory in Iraq.
All this comes at a time when the environment in Iraq has improved signigicantly and the American public has recognized such.
Humbly attempting to do our part, CR Nation will proudly post updates provided by our veterans. This particular update was provided by Jonathan Klingler, outreach director with Students for Victory.
Hey CR Nation folks,
Tonight I arrived in DC for Vets for Freedom’s Vets on the Hill event. There are hundreds of Iraq and Afghanistan vets here and they are all converging on the House and Senate tomorrow to encourage Members of Congress to support the American mission in Iraq. Whenever I have the opportunity to work with members of Vets for Freedom, I am humbled by their class, their dedication to this country, and their committment to our servicemen and women.
Many of you have seen the disrespectful and obnoxious demonstrations of individuals opposed to victory in Iraq. The contrast between both sides of this public debate could not have been more clear last September when General Petraeus testified in front of Congress. While Code Pink activists interrupted one hearing with rude interjections and MoveOn.org published their disgraceful ‘Betray Us’ ad, Vets for Freedom members skillfully advocated the merits of completing the mission in Iraq to our elected officials with class and respect.
Tomorrow will be no different, and I am grateful for the chance to take part in this event with such amazing patriots and great people. My conversations with Vets for Freedom members, most of whom are combat veterans, have shown them to be deeply committed to defeating the terrorists who want to kill us, and intensely determined to ensure that no politician allows their war to be lost for political gain.
These men and woment have given up years of their lives, lost friends, and suffered injuries to keep us safe. Despite all this, they are still giving more to protect us and their comrades in harm’s way. The least we can do is stand beside them and do our part to win the political struggle at home so our troops can win the war overseas.
