South Dakota convention recap

By punch bowl | April 25, 2008

I know this post comes later than normal considering South Dakota’s convention was last weekend, but late is better than never…

In South Dakota convention was held in at the University of South Dakota (Friday night) Vermillion (Saturday).

Friday night a speaker panel and social were held on the University of South Dakota campus. Students heard from a number of individuals who have been and still are involved in South Dakota and National politics.

Speakers included:

Lee Schoenbeck (SD State Senator and former CR Chairman 1980)
Troy Jones (former CR Chairman 1981)
Pat Powers (SD War College Blog and candidate State Senate District 7)
Todd Schlekeway (candidate State House District 11 and former Thune campaign staffer)
Ben Ready (US Senator Thune staffer)
Paul Erickson (former CR, keynote speaker)
Paul Gourley (former CR Chairman 2004 and National CR Chairman 2005-2007)

On Saturday the convention was held in downtown Vermillion at Raziel’s Restaurant. The schedule of events included:

930am - Opening Remarks
945am - Heritage Foundation Presentation
1015am - US Senatorial Candidate Sam Kephart
1045am - US Senatorial Candidate Joel Dykstra
1130am - Lee Breard E.D. Conservative Action Council (former CR Vice-Chair Louisiana)
1200pm - Lunch with keynote speaker Chris Lien Candidate for US House

130pm - 07 Business/08 Business
145pm - Nomination and Election of Candidates for 08-09 School year
200pm - Closing Remarks

The election for chairman was contested. The new Chair is Ryan Budmyr of the University of South Dakota and the new Vice-Chair is Brandon Lindstrom of South Dakota State University.

The turnout was very good this year. Seven of the nine chapter chairman were in attendance, which, I am told, is very good for S.D. Total attendance for both nights was around 50 people.

The Friday night panel discussed a wide range of topics from national politics to local politics to blogging and networking to former CR experiences.

On Saturday, the heritage foundation discussed a number of different topics including Social Security, Medicare, and most specifically taxes.

Our Senatorial and Congressional Candidates spoke through the morning and following lunch. Hugh Weber talked about his experiences as a young adult in the political world and campaigning - he has worked on a number of campaigns and is now the campaign manager a candidate.
