Maine convention recap

By punch bowl | April 28, 2008

As far as I know, Maine was the only state College Republican federation to hold a convention last weekend.

At their convention the hard-working CRs of Maine, said goodbye to Nate Walton, the three term chairman of the Maine College Republicans.

After saying goodbye to Mr. Walton, the Maine CRs said hello to their new chairman Alex Willette. Mr. Willette, as I understand it, is currently a freshman, but is said to be “rising”.

Also noteworthy, U.S. Senator Susan Collins was in attendance (as you can see in the picture below)

What is failed to be mentioned is that one-third of the members of the convention stage a walked out. The entire executive staff and the original nominee for Vice-chairman left the organization as did Colby College, the Maine CRs flagship chapter.

One table (out of many) walked out and everyone clapped as they left. Good riddance to bad seeds who are finished in politics as a result of their immature stunt. Otherwise a great convention though.

Ralph Kettell in this infamous video was one of the lead kids of the handful who walked out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gFGit_tZDqs. What a loser. Colby is not that great, and the exec. staff members that left all are serious losers too. The new state leadership team is awesome though.

Big bad Nate Walton why don’t you come out behind the disguise of annonymous names and sign your name to you comments. If Colby is not that great then why has it raised $25,000 this year and put on more events in this past week then were put on by all of the rest of the chapters in the state. Moreover, last year Colby was awarded Chapter of the Year and I, a colby student, was awarded activist of the year. It seems strange that the club that contributed one-third of the Maine CRs volunteer hours is now being called “not that great”. The best poor Nate has to offer is a video that has been seen numerous times since it was released nearly a year ago.

I never post on these things, but when I was reading over the comments and saw a lie, I had to say something!

    Mr. Roundtree:

You’re lying, but I’d expect nothing less of you at this point. You lost; please move on from this. Not enough people wanted you as their “leader”.

Saying that 1/3 of the people that walked out is a farce. A maximum of 8 people walked out (all from the same school), 5 of which never do anything in the organization and just came because they were manipulated to do so. These group of outcast Maine CR students purposely arrived late after the keynote speech (U.S. Senator Collins), ate our catered meal and walked out after the voting didn’t go their way.

They actually had the audacity to walk out infront of State Party leadership, Congressional Candidates, US Senate Staffers, and various GOP activists!

As this group of sore losers walked out, the entire room clapped and cheered, including congressional candidates, US Senate staffers and GOP activists from around the State of Maine.

These kids are no longer welcome in Maine Republican politics because of their immaturity and poor attitudes. They certainly are no longer respected. Party leadership in the Maine GOP as well as RNC staffers and campaigns are fully aware of their behavior and are no longer fans.

Our organization has always been very successful because of the support and great relationship of our State Party; Rest assured that getting a job (or even a volunteer opportunity!!) will be near impossible for these sore losers, whether it’s local or statewide.

Take it from someone who was there, our Convention was undeniably one of the best ones in Maine CR history! An added bonus was *finally* getting rid of the negative attitudes in this organization and being able to focus on what the Maine CRs is really all about: electing Republicans and spreading conservative ideas across our college campuses!

Freshman State Chairman? Sounds like somebody from the Walton School of CR Finance, who’s donor list consists of Daddy.

If the convention was so great, then why were there only 35 total students in attendance? Two years ago, the Maine CRs had over a 100 students at their convention and it was also held in Portland, ME.

Um this convention had like just as many. Nice try though.

I thought UMF was the flagship chapter, from what I had heard they should have received it last year as well, but Walton wanted to let someone else have it for a change.

    The infighting needs to stop.

You didn’t get a position, so you came to your state CR convention and threw a hissy fit?

PLEASE tell me you have a reason that’s just a little bit better.

Jake Roundtree was nominated to be the Vice-Chairman of the Maine CRs in early April, but declined the offer a few days before the convention. He sent out an email to all Maine CRs detailing his reasons for doing so and from what I read there were many.

I am not as active a CR as many in Maine and I could not attend the convention unfortunately, but my own sense and what I have heard from others is that the organization has been slipping in the last several months.

The organization has not been slipping yet some people were trying to cause political problems. That is now over now that there is a new team in charge. At least I hope as much.

I meant Roundtree and Co were causing problems. Now that they are gone, things should be good again.

Kudos to the Maine CRs for a great state convention. Hats off to Nate Walton for a great three years as state chair. Best wishes to the new leadership for the future!
