New Jersey Convention recap

By punch bowl | May 4, 2008

As far as I know (which isn’t very far), New Jersey was the only state fed. to have a convention this weekend. Furthermore, this, I think, is that last fed. convention of the year.

In New Jersey, Chris Stark exited as chair and was replaced by Terence Grado.

Speakers included Will Croswell and Esther Clark (both with the CRNC), one congressman and two senate candidates.

I am told the NJ convention attracted 20 College Republicans.

Rutgers New Brunswick sent more College Republicans to CPAC than there were CRs at that convention.

There were more than 20 CRs though. I’d say 30.

You could see the re-birth of the Republican Party in NJ in that room. There may only have been 20 ppl but they were the most dedicated GOP activists in the stare. Sen. Kean was especially impressive and I would not doubt that he will be our next Governor.

20 to 30 people? I hear the California Convention was somewhere between 250 and 300 people, including our national chair Charlie Smith.

Very interesting. Lets say for the sake of argument that there weren’t 20, just the state chair and ten CRs. Obviously the state chair could have done better. But the ten CRs who did show up would be the most dedicated activists in the whole state, and they are now all fuming about this kick to their state fed’s face by the national office, to whom they no doubt extended a warm welcome.

It’s really unfair to compare the New Jersey and California conventions, it’s apples to oranges.

I don’t know the specific numbers, but to make such a comparison you’ve got to take into account the number of chapters, statewide membership, and especially cash on hand. I’d be shocked if there was any similarity on any of those factors.
