RNC Wants Ad “100″ Pulled
By lace | May 4, 2008
Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan and Chief Counsel Sean Cairncross are calling for the DNC’s ad “100″ to be pulled from networks. Additionally, the RNC has filed an official complaint with the FEC. The ad (see below) shows images of war and quotes Senator McCain as saying the Iraq war could go on for 100 years.
First, the RNC claims the ad is false and misleading while also pointing out that that the stations have “an obligation to protect the public from airing a deliberate falsehood.” The quote, they argue, is taken out of context. John McCain’s actual “100 year quote” is
“Maybe 100. As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, it’s fine with me, and I hope it would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where Al-Qaida is training, recruiting, equipping, and motivating people every single day.”
While the DNC quotes John McCain as saying…
“May 100. That would be fine with me.”
Second, The RNC says the ad is over the legal FEC contribution limit to the Clinton/Obama campaigns (worth over $5k). The catch here is that the FEC does not have enough commissioners to meet a quorum on ruling if the complaint is valid.
