McCain Behind Democrats in Texas Fundraising
By lace | May 11, 2008
The center for Responsive Politics reports that Senator John McCain has raised less money in Texas than his Democratic counterparts. The numbers are:
McCain: $5.5 million
Clinton: $6.8 million
Obama: $6 million
Typically, Texas has been known to be a state with Republican money ready and willing to be donated. In 2004, President George W. Bush raised $23 million while Senator Kerry raised about 1/8 of that amount. McCain’s lack of funds in the Lone Star State could mean 2 things: Texans aren’t on board with McCain quite yet and/or Texans are upset that the McCain-Feingold Act limited their contributions in ‘04.
Perhaps the Romney PAC will donate to McCain.
On Saturday, McCain met with Romney supporters at the Hilton Americas Houston. The Romney supporters were meeting for a Romney campaign reunion.

McCain isn’t popular in Texas, but it has more to do with social issues (i.e. immigration) than it does campaign finance reform.
Until there is a clear Democrat candidate, support will not swing McCain’s way. However, it will come. Donors just need to be reminded that McCain isn’t perfect, but he’s certainly much better than any other option on the table. They won’t fully get the picture until it’s a McCain/Obama face off.
For better or worse, that’s the way it is.

Tim if you’re out there, I read your post on LI’s field reps. I’m afraid that I have to agree with you. An LI field rep came to my campus in the Fall. He took like six of our freshmen to start a “great conservative club.” Three weeks later, the startup organization bombed out of existance with like 2 or 3 people showing to the last two meetings.
We should mobilize to inform CR leaders that we all need to fight these people. All those freshmen? Yeah they never came back to the CR chapter — ANY OF THEM — and they all feel like crap because their efforts flopped.

Oh and the leader of the startup club, one of the things he wanted to do with the club was have a certain type of event on campus that the CR chapter normally did. Well, when the CR chapter got around to it, this kid still felt so bad that he didn’t even stop by.

That is very interesting. The Leadership Institute is a very low-quality organization. It’s staffed by people who can’t really find work elsewhere and are lured by the seemingly high pay incentives. They think that working at LI will get them into politics but they are terribly mistaken. If CRs are the future leaders of America, then LI people are the future bottom-feeders. I know many LI people and have a very poor opinion of them.
LI workers used to frequently come to my campus, show up to CR meetings, and beg people to start “pro-life” clubs. Not surprisingly, they were very unsuccessful. Nobody wants to start those groups. Those who did were met with very little success.
CR groups are often very fun and social, give people a chance to become familiar with campaigns, and sometimes produce future political leaders. CR groups should resist the efforts of the LI loonies who try to pry members away from their groups so they can start stupid “conservative clubs.”
By the way, the LI group that flopped at your school is probably still included on their list of “more than 1000″ active conservative student organizations.

Oh, by the way, be prepared to see LI field reps coming to your campus and asking you to start Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) chapters. Jeff Frazee, the guy who was in charge of Ron Paul’s youth effort, is starting this lame new organization.
Frazee used to be a Campus Services Coordinator at the Leadership Institute and is trying to get YAL off the ground now. Word on the street is that he has approval from the Leadership Institute, and that LI field reps will begin asking students to start YAL chapters.
CRs should avoid these loonies like the plague. They’re bad news and far too radical.
