Rawhide returns

By rawhide | May 21, 2008

Not that anyone noticed that I had taken an extended leave of absence to wrap up the semester. But I’m back and looking forward to the summer ahead.

As faithful readers know, I love campaign ads. This summer, I will be posting commercials for statewide candidates around the country to give a flavor for the issues in other states. It fascinates me, so you’ll just have to put up with random posts on far-distant states.

Today’s focus: Colorado. Former Republican Congressman Bob Schaffer is running against Democratic Congressman Mark Udall. Both recently released their first commercials.

Schaffer introduces himself to Colorado:

Udall talks energy:

Interest group thinks there’s something about Bob:

The interest group ad is cute. I especially like the kid who looks both ways before he says that Bob does the right thing, “even when no one’s looking.” It’s a nice change from the normal campaign commercial.

Schaffer’s commercial is good, except for the fact that when he claims that “Colorado is my life,” and recounts proposing to his wife atop Pike’s Peak, the mountain behind him is Mt. McKinley, which is located in Alaska. The Schaffer campaign removed the commercial and replaced it with the correct mountain. The new version can be viewed here.

The Udall commercial is strong and tough. I like it. Round 1 in Colorado to Udall.
