“Most ambitious field team ever”

By punch bowl | August 30, 2008

The CRNC recently released the following press announcement to CR Nation:

Washington, D.C.- Fifty College Republican Field Representatives are arriving in thirty-one states around the country today. They will spend the next ten weeks on college campuses recruiting new College Republican members and registering students to vote. They will augment their grassroots recruitment efforts with online activism tools, such as blogs, YouTube, and Twitter.

The fifty-person field team is the most ambitious in College Republican history. Their goal is to recruit 100,000 new members and register 25,000 new voters before Election Day.

College Republican National Committee Chairman Charlie Smith said: “We are very excited to be launching our most ambitious field team ever. The youth vote will play a huge role in the 2008 elections, and the College Republican field reps will play an important role in turning out young voters for Republican candidates.”

This is insulting to our intelligence. Charlie and company must think we’re all dupes. The only thing ambitious is their attempt to cover up sub-par recruitment and poor decision-making in an all-important presidential election year.

Really Michigan rocks? All you do is criticize. Grow the eff up and run for office next June at convention if you think the current administration is that horrible. People like you do nothing but bitch and complain. Charlie and company work extremely hard to keep this organization running.

The point of press releases to alert, not just CR Nation of our activities, but also the people who read the CRNC website, the donors, the media, and of course other CRs. Do some research before you open your mouth.

And I encourage you to follow lifeinthefield.com so you can see the ambition of the field reps Charlie is talking about.

Wow, you see really informed on the field program! You must have some great personal insight or some “secret source” that is feeding you this inside info. Please do share with us!

Until then you might consider that the field reps went through the most thorough vetting process ever, they received the most detailed and intense training ever, they are fully-funded for the first time in history, they are all equipped with video cameras for the first time ever (something our party really needs), and they were placed in states with tough political races as opposed to given out as favors to state chairs who are on the admin’s team.

So, I’d love to hear your great points about how the field program sucks from your insider source, but until then why don’t you quit bitching and go outside and recruit some volunteers for the GOTV effort we are going to need to win.

I would like to take a break from criticizing the CRNC for their subpar job performance, and praise them for putting together such an ambitious press release.

It seems this weekend was a big one for the CRNC. They wrote this new release and finally updated the press part of the website for the first time since before spring break. Apparently, CRs hadn’t been in the news for the last 5 and a half months. Ambition is back!

In the past the CRNC sent more than 50 field reps and they went to more than 31 states. But they didn’t twitter and they didn’t have ambition. Now they do! Ambition is here!

Paul Gourley got 60+ field reps in 2006.

Charlie Smith got 50 in 2008.

    How is this ambitious?

    Why the deception?

Paul Gourley accepted every person who applied to the field program… and didn’t reimburse a lot of those people until others came in and cleaned up a the mess

Will Crosswell and the gang interviewed over a couple hundred people, turning down people who wouldn’t do a good job

Quality over quantity. You don’t want any Morgan Wilkes like mistakes out there. From what I’ve seen, all 50 look pretty competent and will give CRs’ a good name

    To The Facts–

Over 60 were hired. Some were no shows at training and about 5 were fired during/after training.

    Get YOUR facts straight.

Charlie, I hope you reimbursed the ones you fired.

And CRNC people, maybe you need to realize that not every field representative needs to be the next Ryan Seacrest. I mean, a guy who seems “outgoing” and “energetic” is who you want as a field rep, but the guy who didn’t quite make your cut may still be better at the game of recruiting.

  12. anonymous Says:

    Case Study:
“Johnny Bravo” is a CRNC field rep for Charlie Smith. Energetic, social, STORM fanatic.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is a CRNC field rep for Paul Gourley. Adequate but he’s a little weird.

Johnny Bravo misses four major involvement fairs because the state chair didn’t research when his schools were having major events. Buffy gets to all the fairs and ends up recruiting 40% more CRs, even though he spent three weekdays a week at vampire conventions. Point: State chairs can mess it all up.

I think the point here is pretty simple. Is this, as the CRNC would have us believe, the “most ambitious field rep program ever”? The answer is no.

I don’t know the details of how many people were interviewed or the selection process. But that’s irrelevant. At the end of the day, how many boots are on the ground is what matters. The quality vs. quantity argument is interesting, but you never know how people are going to turn out until you actually put them in the field.

Kudos to NewCRNC and staff. I don’t think they could BS any better.

    Really dude?,

The point of press releases are to inform, not to lie, which is exactly what happened here. We’ve already established that Gourley recruited more field reps (whatever their quality). Read the press release again “The FIFTY-person field team is the most ambitious in College Republican history”. Clearly, the goals of that team were not the ambitious part the release was referencing(even though those goals ARE ambitious) it was instead the NUMBER. And by numbers, Gourley has him.

Once again, why do you have to act like this is a personal attack on Charlie? “Tom, this is business, and this kid is takin it very very personal”. And just because you criticize doesn’t mean we want to run for office. Why does that have to be a qualifier to criticize?

  16. Chad Ocho Cinco Says:

    Super Informed,

“…and they were placed in states with tough political races…”

Really? I must have forgotten about the monumental task of making sure Kansas, Texas, Mississippi, Arizona, Georgia, Kentucky, and North Carolina all stay for McCain/win their Senate races (most of those don’t have a Senate race or not a close Senate race)

  17. Explain Says:
    September 2nd, 2008 at 5:59 pm

I do not understand this quality argument. It seems most of the field reps have already completed some sort of internship in the past. If they were such high quality, then why are they essentially still completing another internship? Shouldn’t they be able to get a job elsewhere? I don’t think CRNC needs to pay as much as LI, but most of the truly quality people would never ever applied bc the compensation is so low.
