McCain wins Dartmouth CR Poll

Racking up his second CR poll win (that I know of), John McCain takes the prize among the conservative youth at Darmouth. Last week, the Dartmouth College Republicans sponsored a straw poll of its members. The results are as follows – McCain: 23 (25.6%) Giuliani: 20 (22.2%) Paul: 19 (21.1%) Romney:...

Absence of Activity

I want to begin by apologizing for the recent lack of activity on CR Nation. While there is no excuse for this absence below is the story of what we have all been up to.

-Kittyhawk:
Soon after her last post in August she was offered a job on a Campaign for the 2010 Election cycle. Since she began this job she has been too busy to be posting on CR Nation. While her tenure with us here was short lived we are appreciative for all the support she has provided.

-Sage of Monticello
Sage finally graduated and has been out of the CR loop for awhile. In the down economy he was without a job for several months but he has since found a job at a local newspaper as an advertising sales rep.

-Rawhide
Since his last post Rawhide dropped out of college (and CRs as well) in order to take over his families large rural farm operation. He is still very active in grassroots politics and is campaign manager for a State Assembly candidate in his spare time.

ME (punch bowl)
I have been very busy this past year finishing law school. I’ve never been a great student but I was forced to focus on my studies more when I looked at the prospect if postponing graduation by another year. As graduation nears it looks like I will be working at a small law firm after graduation.

These new responsibilities keep me from being able to continue CR nation. As I move on with my life it is bitter sweet to no longer be able to give you the latest CR news and gossip. At times the inside politics of CRs have been ridiculous, but overall I feel that my time within CRs has been very positive. CRs has helped me to grow and taught me more than anything else since I started college.

As we move forward I would like for CR Nation to continue to be a place for CRs to share news and information. In order to keep CR Nation going we need someone to continue to run this site. I will continue to pay the costs associated with the site if someone else will start authoring posts. If you are interested in being the NEXT CR Nation author please email CRNation@gmail.com with your name, contact info, and why you would be a good author for CR Nation.

Thanks for all your help over the years.

CR Alumni: 21-year old CR elected to County Comission

The Detroit Free Pres recently profiled a young conservative elected to county government in the Detroit area.

Harry Awdey was elected to the Macomb County Charter Commission in November at the age of 20 beating his Democrat opponent with 52% of the vote.

Now 21, Mr. Awdey is one of only four Republicans on the 26-member commission, which is charged with helping draft a new constitution to reform county government.

When asked how he became interested in politics and government, Mr. Awdey claims “it started with a bearded high school teacher who espoused socialist principles and decorated his history classroom with photos of famous communists.”

“He wore sandals and hated corporations,” Awdey recalled of his teacher. “He drove a VW and idealized fascism.”

On the youth and the Republican Party, Mr. Awdey, like us all, has an opinion. Mr. Awdey thinks that “the party has neglected the core principles of conservatism — limited government, lower taxes and individual liberty.”

He continues, “I don’t think social issues should define us as a party,” said Awdey, now 21. “You hear more from the Republican Party about the dangers of online gambling than affordable college tuition. I can see why there is a disconnect between young people and the Republican Party.”

But unlike some opinions, there might be something to Mr. Awdey’s.
