Bush wins policy battle, reauthorizes SCHIP
Sunday, December 30th, 2007After resisting Democratic led efforts to expand the popular State Children Heatlh Insruance Program (SCHIP) by $35 billion by exercising his veto pen twice, President Bush signed a bill reauthorizing, not expanding, the program at its current spending levels until March 2009.
As you may remember, Bush vetoed the SCHIP expansion because it was funded through […]
SCHIP still haunts the halls of Congress
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007The Senate will return to SCHIP today. This version of the bill was quickly pushed through the House, though it offers little improvement over the previous version of the bill.

Smoking for Healtcare: It’s Just Dumb
Tuesday, October 30th, 2007Democrats want to fund SCHIP by increasing taxes on tobacco products. However, the tax increase with the current number of smokers will not cover the entire cost of the bill. Even so, smoking for healthcare just seems dumb, as the below video makes vividly clear.

SCHIP Veto Sustained
Thursday, October 18th, 2007Earlier today, Democrats mounted an effort to override President Bush’s veto of SCHIP. It failed.
All Democrats, save two, voted in favor of the override.
44 Republicans voted in favor of the override.
Overall, the bill came 13 votes short of the constitutionally required two-thirds supermajority to override a presidential veto.
More coming later.

Thursday, October 18th, 2007The level of political discourse needs to improve. Both parties have improvements to make. But in this case, a California liberal Democrat makes an ass out of himself on the Floor of the House.
MoveOn.org raising money to run SCHIP ad
Wednesday, October 17th, 2007Republicans support health care for poor children. Either for moral, philosophical, or political reasons, they all do. Indeed there is a conservative philosophical argument (and counter argument) that can be made that providing government health care for children is within the proper scope of government authority.
However, SCHIP is a bad bill and no […]
Bush Vetoes SCHIP Legislation
Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007Bush Vetoed the SCHIP legislation earlier today, citing its fiscal irresponsbility stemming from its coverage of adults, children who already have private insurance and children of parents who make $80,000 a year.
No one is against covering at risk children, but kids with parents who make $80,000 a year or kids that already have insurance are […]
