Barack Obama’s rock star-like reception among young voters has been one of the biggest stories of the presidential campaign.

So, it’s not stunning that this morning, he announced the support of the president and vice president of the College Democrats of America, who are superdelegates. They pledged to help get their peers to work for Obama.

“We reached out to college students nationwide through Facebook, MySpace and YouTube and the responses were overwhelming. College students want change — and Senator Obama offers an opportunity for all of us to move forward in this country to talk about the issues that matter,” the group’s president, Lauren Wolfe said in a statement provided by the Obama camp.

Added the group’s vice president, Awais Khaleel: “As college students, we’ve come of age under the failed leadership of George W. Bush and we are excited that we finally have a candidate who speaks to our issues. Senator Obama is talking about the issues we care about as college students – whether that’s college affordability or ending the Iraq war.”

The College Republicans will meet up with the campaign for the Grand Opening of their new headquarters located at 1707 Rt. 9 in Clifton Park at 12 p.m.

The NY CRs tell me that Sandy Treadwell is a trusted conservative who encompasses the values of the New York College Republican State Committee.

Union College Republican chairwoman and NYCRSC treasurer Abigail Cable believes that “Sandy Treadwell is an experienced politician who represents the Republicans’ best bet for taking back the 20th district. I look forward to volunteering for his campaign”.

The 20th Congressional District leans “very slightly” to the right. The seat was lost in 2006 because the Republican incumbent (1) was caught partying at a fraternity house and (2) had ties to lobbyists.

In Minnesota, the College Republicans will be hosting SUPER SATURDAY II on May 17 in which CRs “venture out to the suburbs…for an afternoon of grassroots politicking…”

After the door-to-door volunteering, the MN College Republicans have planned a CR BBQ and softball game intended to “celebrate the end of the semester and kickoff a busy summer…”

In Texas, the College Republicans are participating in a statewide effort aimed at reaching out to voters in The Lone Star State. Hundreds of volunteers will be knocking on doors in neighborhoods across the state, urging them to support the Republican ticket this November. Volunteers knocking on doors will include such notable elected officials as, US Senator John Cornyn, Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams, and Republican Party of Texas Chairman Roger Williams.

To reach the goal of 100,000 contacts statewide, volunteers who knock on more than 60 doors will be entered to win one of ten $250 cash prizes.

But maybe the Obama camp should be more worried. The voters who went against Obama Tuesday night — white, rural, older, low-income and without college degrees — don’t just live in West Virginia. They live everywhere in the country, in places Obama needs to win.

Conservative student activist Dennis Lennox has been running a grassroots campaign against Peters. Lennox believes that Peters is violating the terms of his contract by campaigning while a professor.

In a press release to CR Nation, the Students Against Gary Peters group stated that:

A full-time temporary assistant professor of political science, Peters has been a controversial hire for CMU because he is running despite a contractual obligation to give his “full-time … primary commitment” through the 2009/10 school year.

The group further stated that:

After abusing the trust of taxpayers and sacrificing the education of students for nearly a year, Democratic congressional candidate Gary Peters is being forced out of his professorship at Central Michigan University.

Peters will be subjected to a new CMU policy requiring professors running for office to resign or take a leave of absence 60 days before an election. In Peters’ case, the primary election is August 5.

After learning of the new policy, the group’s leader, Dennis Lennox, had this to say:

CMU is finally doing the right thing and holding Gary Peters accountable. This is a victory for the hundreds of students, alumni and legislators who wanted Gary Peters to pick between Congress and campus.

Furthermore, the press release state that CMU sources indicate the policy is a result of the Petersgate controversy.

Apparently, Horowitz has released ads prior to the event, criticizing the Muslim Student Association. The ads say:

“In its nearly 600 chapters at colleges across the country, the Muslim Student Association postures as just another campus religious and cultural organization. In fact, the MSA is a radical political group that was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the godfather of al Qaeda and Hamas, to bring the jihad into the heart of American higher education.”

UCSB College Republicans Executive Director Ryan McNicholas said he is looking forward to hosting Horowitz’s lecture.

“The best thing about David coming to UCSB is that anyone who disagrees with him will be able to ask questions, specifically about the advertisement,” McNicholas said. “I hope that the MSA can come and ask David questions directly so that they can hear his response and not attack him like they have in the past in the Nexus and online.”
