California College Republicans Announces Internship Program

By punch bowl | June 26, 2009

CCR announces Internship Program in press release to CR Nation:

The California College Republicans (CCR) is proud to announce the launch of their statewide Legislative and Congressional Internship Program. CCR is committed to helping conservative college students find internships to build upon prior experience, providing them with the opportunity to hone their skills in a professional political environment.

“I’m told quite often that there are more jobs available than qualified applicants,” said California College Republicans Chairman Michael Antonopoulos. “That is why we believe our organization can serve as a bridge for students seeking careers and job experience in the political realm.”

The CCR Internship Program will serve as a means for College Republicans to connect with elected officials near their home, school
or work. Those interested in internships can forward their resumes to the state organization and have them distributed to the appropriate contacts in legislative offices, providing elected officials with immediate access to qualified applicants in their respective districts.

For more information on the Internship Program, please contact Clinton Soffer at Clinton.Soffer@CollegeGOP.org.

Why don’t more states do something like this? More importantly, why doesn’t the CRNC do something like this?

Buchanan on Iran

By rawhide | June 25, 2009

Pat Buchanan can be a very polarizing figure, staking out positions many consider too radical, too fringe. Even if you disagree with him, Buchanan often has thoughtful, well-written columns. His recent series on the Iranian protests and unrest are especially good:

Outlasting the Ayatollahs“;

Tiananmen Moments“; and

Ten Days That Shook Tehran.”

A Dollar a Day (adds up way faster than you think)

By kittyhawk | June 25, 2009

While we’re on the subject of healthcare and failing government policies, take note of this brilliant idea.

Is it just me, or is everything wrong with using taxpayers’ money to fund this program? Since when does the government subsidize morality? Oh, wait, it’s not morality, abstinence is not required! Plus it’s totally discriminatory, because unless you had a sister who gave birth before age 18 and (evidently) do not have a family member who’s obtained a college degree, you’re not eligible! It’s just like liberals, though, when “creative ways are needed” to address an issue they get creative with other people’s money.

Not only that, let’s do the math here: 6/125 (# of girls in the program who got pregnant or otherwise dropped out) > 7.2/1,000 (average national teen birth rate) Granted, the people choosing the lucky participants say that this is a high-risk group. But if you ask me, the criteria they’re using are catching low-risk young women: Are you more or less likely to get pregnant as a teen after watching your sister go through it, especially if you’re still in school and working toward college?

One more quick calculation: 12 (years program has been running) x $75,000 (per year cost) = $900,000 To keep 119 girls from getting pregnant. “If it works”, Mr. Program Director? When are we going to make the tough call?

More disturbing is the Federal budget item associated with this happy statement. If the above is an example of them “carefully testing innovative approaches”, that money is doomed before it’s spent. Nothing new, I know. Just another example of well-intentioned politicians doing as they please with tax dollars, and botching the job in the process. But we all know about the road to hell and good intentions!

Liberty University CRs caught in crossfire

By rawhide | June 24, 2009

Last month, Liberty University de-recognized the College Democrats chapter because of their support of the national Democratic party and platform. Now, the College Republicans have lost official recognition as well:

Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Tuesday that a change in university policy will allow the Liberty University College Democrats to exist as an unofficial club. The policy change, which took effect Monday, also changed the College Republicans from an officially recognized campus group to the new unofficial status.

Jerry Falwell made his name with his “Moral Majority” and getting Christians involved in politics. It’s a lot harder for Christians attending Falwell’s Liberty University to get involved now.

College Republicans: Live twitter #obamercial using #crnc, compete for $25 iTunes giftcard

By punch bowl | June 23, 2009

From the College Republican blog:

As many of you know, on Wednesday, June 24th, ABC has turned over an hour of prime-time programming to President Obama to promote his government healthcare program. This “infomercial” starts at 10pm (Eastern) live from the White House. ABC has rejected the RNC’s requests to counter the President’s debate and has turned down all commercials that oppose a democrat, liberal solution.

Therefore, to make sure our voices of opposition are heard, College Republicans from the DC area will be taking part in a demonstration outside the White House. College Republicans are joining forces to shine a light on the weaknesses and high-cost of a government run option.

Tomorrow night, however, College Republicans from across the country can take place in the debate regardless of location. We are encouraging you to join us on Twitter and let us know what you and fellow young conservatives think about the policies the President is promoting regarding health care. Simply use the #CRNC hashtag with your posts which will show up on the CRNC website’s Twitter-feed. We’ll use your thoughts, quotes, and opinions for future healthcare related projects.

The writers of the three most insightful quotes and opinions that point out the inadequacies of government run healthcare will receive a $25 iTunes gift card from the CRNC.

All tweets must be submitted by midnight (Pacific) Thursday, June 25th and must use the #CRNC hashtag to qualify. Please spread the word and take part in the discussion LIVE with College Republicans across the country!

As I understand it, most, if not all, of the National Officers will be participating. So will CR Nation. Should be a fun time, aside from, ya know, the brazen and blatant unfairness intended to shut one-side out of the debate in order to build support for a massive government takeover of yet another private industry.

Stop government-run health care

By sage of monticello | June 23, 2009

An advertisement produced by the RNC that won’t air on ABC because, well, our money (and message) is no good to them. The only currency (and message) ABC currently accepts is unpaid-for, deficit-increasing, bureaucratic-based, and government-run, unless of course, such is proposed by a Republican, and then ABC is automatically against it.

STORM cut, Orlando board meeting announced

By punch bowl | June 20, 2009

With about 25 State Chairs and the entire CRNC Executive Board, the bomb-shell announcement of the new administration’s first conference call with the National Board on Thursday was that the CRNC has cut STORM.

On the call, the announcement was made by CRNC Treasurer Brand Kroeger.

According to Mr. Kroeger, after reviewing the books and looking at STORM’s analytics, the CRNC could not justify continuing to pay for the database.

STORM was costing the CRNC upwards of $14,000 per month to maintain, but only generating a little over 100 hits in the same period.

Running the numbers, that means the CRNC was paying $140 per hit – an astounding amount.

Asking around, College Republican leaders seem pleased with the decision, and Mr. Howell’s budget cutting measures.

The CRNC will not be database-less for long. A new database is reportedly being built around the results of a survey of College Republicans conducted several months ago by the CRNC and the David All Group.

The call was also used to introduce Tommy Jardon, former Southern Regional Vice-Chairman, as CRNC Executive Director. In an email following the call, Mr. Jardon said,

As members of the Committee, I consider each and every one of you my “boss.” Please feel free to reach out to me with any comments, concerns, questions, or ideas you may have. I, Zach Howell our Chairman, the national officers, and the entire CRNC are resources at your disposal.

Additionally, we found out on the call that the CRNC Fall Board Meeting will be held November 20-22 at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando Studios in Orlando, FL.

For State Chairs, the CRNC will reportedly cover the hotel and two meals. This board meeting, however, will be the first in which ALL College Republicans are welcome.

To make it more economically feasible for non-State Chair College Republicans the CRNC has secured deeply discounted rates on hotels and other attractions in the Orlando area.

Lastly, the call was used to push efforts to get College Republicans to deploy to the upcoming gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey.

Terence Grado, former NJ College Republican Chairman and current Northeast Regional Vice-Chairman, and current VA College Republican Chairwoman Kate Maxwell both talked about their respective states.

Mr. Howell is reportedly meeting with RGA Executive Director Nick Ayers to discuss how the College Republicans can best be of service.

As always, your thoughts?
